CD REVIEWTELEMANN Suites & Concerto for recorder and orchestraby Tom Manoff |

A new CD from recorder player Maurice Steger
|
Astonishing is the only word I can use for Maurice Steger on his new disk: Telemann -Suites & Concerto for recorder and orchestra. However gentle its sound, the recorder is a beast to tame, and tame it Steger does. Who knew there was an incarnation of Orpheus among the Swiss? Steger’ s home is Zurich, and from it he travels to concerts and recording sessions with the some of the best ensembles and soloists in the world.
The Akademie für Alte Muzik is one such ensemble, easily among the world’s finest early music outfits. Add to the menu the enchanting recorder music by Georg Philipp Telemann, and a must-have recording pops right out.
When I was growing up we called Telemann’s late style Rococco, which has, for some reason become forbidden by musicologists. Today the term is Style Galant . Call it what you will. It’ s the music that counts, and the best from this period between the Baroque and Classical is particularly fascinating if sometimes hard to categorize.
I can’t stop playing this CD.
